FINALLY, he asked you out. You really want to impress him and now, the only thing you can think of is what to what to wear on a first date.

When it comes to figuring out what to wear on a first date, an old and very much overused saying comes to mind. “First impressions last.” Yep, it might sound cliche, but there’s a reason why this phrase isn’t quite outdated yet. That’s because it really isn’t.

How you look on your first date will weigh heavily on the guy’s decision to ask you out again. Of course, many women will argue that guys should look beyond how we look and like us for who we are. That’s true – in a perfect world.

Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world, and men, being the visual creatures that they are, rely heavily on the physical aspects to gauge whether they can connect with a woman on a more personal level. It sounds superficial, right?

There’s actually a method to all this madness. You see, the way you carry yourself tells a man how comfortable you are in your own skin, and the way you dress yourself tells them a lot about your personality. For men, it’s all about the packaging, so the better you present yourself, the bigger the chances he’s going to ask you out again.

How you feel in your clothes can also make or break a date. If you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, you may send mixed signals to the guy that you’re not interested in him, when in fact, you’re just worried that your bra strap is showing, or that you’re in agony because you seem to have outgrown your shoes by a size or two.

This is why you should carefully consider what you’re going to wear on a first date – especially if you’re planning to see him again, and again, and again.

Here are a few tips that can help you find a perfect first date outfit.

Dress For The Location

Yes, you look absolutely stunning in that strapless dress and those new stilettos you bought the other day, but he’s taking you to the movies. Do you really think it’s appropriate?

While it’s important to look your best and wear flattering outfits on a first date, you have to consider where you’re going and what activities he has in store for your first date. If he says dinner and dancing, then ditch the skinny jeans and super sexy top and opt for something more appropriate.

First dates are also a chance for a guy to impress a girl, so he may say that the date is a surprise. If this happens, ask him for some clues. That way, you’re not dressed for a night of clubbing when he’s actually taking you for a romantic stroll at the beach. If he’s not giving you anything to work with, have a backup outfit prepared.

Dress Comfortably

Remember that a date, especially the first one, gives two people a chance to get to know each other better and enjoy each other’s company. If you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, you’re definitely not going to have fun.

The worst part is that most men don’t realize that it’s your clothes or shoes that are bothering you. They may interpret the worried looks and the nervous energy coming from you as a sign that you’re not interested in them or that they might have said or done something to offend you.

You wouldn’t want a guy to be turned off just because of a bad wardrobe choice. If you’re wearing something you are comfortable in, you can act more naturally and move more confidently.

Wear Something Flattering

If you’re thinking of wearing sweatpants or anything similar, forget it. Who would wear such a thing on a first date? You’d be surprised at how some women take the “dress comfortably” rule a little too literally.

You should be emphasizing your best assets, not hiding them. Be careful not to go too far with the sexy vixen look, though. The goal is to look sexy without actually revealing too much. A tight-fitting sweater works better than a tube top if you want to emphasize your voluptuous curves.

You’ll be surprised at how much of a turn-on it is for guys when you leave something to the imagination. The colors you choose to wear are also important in the dress-up game. Choose hues that will complement your skin tone or make your eye color pop.

Accessorize Moderately

Overdressing may be fine, but over-accessorizing is a definite no-no. Don’t blind your date with all the shiny bling you have on. He wants to see you, not your excessive amount of jewelry that takes their attention away from your face.

One way to avoid burying yourself in all your accessories and jewelry is to look in the mirror before you leave and remove a piece or two. It’s better if you get rid of most of them, especially if you’re spending your date outdoors.

If you’re going to keep a piece of jewelry, make it an ice-breaker piece, preferably something with a nice, but short story attached to it. Something like a necklace your father gave you for your sweet sixteenth or a beautiful brooch you got at a bargain on a trip overseas. This way, when he notices it, you can tell him about it and start a conversation.

Be Clean

The clothes you wear won’t matter if you look like you don’t really care about hygiene. You shouldn’t only look good, you should also smell good.

Start getting ready early (so you don’t make him wait longer than you usually make a guy wait for you) to make time for all your pre-date rituals. If you don’t have much time, before the date, you may want to do your plucking and waxing the day before.

Don’t forget to put essential makeup items in your purse so you can re-touch mid-way through the date.

Getting ready for a first date may seem a tad bit too complicated, but once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature to you and you’ll never have to worry about what to wear next time. If you really want to make a good first impression and score a second date, pay enough attention to your appearance to catch his eye.

Once you’re already out with your date, stop fussing about the way you look and focus on how much fun you’re having with your date. If you dress properly and play your cards right, you’ll surely get a second date.
